EthnoPsychology

EthnoPsychology can best be described as intercultural psychology that addresses cultural beliefs and traditional practices rather than focusing solely on Westernised Psychology.

An EthnoPsycology Practitioner allows the possibility of alternate sources such as cultural or religious beliefs and practices as the possible source that could affect someone’s behaviour. The practitioner will therefore address certain issues based on the beliefs rather than steering away towards alternate solutions. It is therefore important for a practitioner to have a prior understanding of such beliefs or traditions for assistance.

What sets an EthnoPsychology Practitioner apart from other modalities is a client-centred approach rather than a therapist centred approach. The Practitioner uses a person’s internal beliefs or traditions as the basis for assistance rather than their own opinions and solutions.

When a person believes that God is the source of their wellbeing, their provider or that God offers them internal guidance, the Practitioner will utilise such beliefs for assistance. Traditional beliefs vary from one culture to another and from one religious group to another.

The client-centred approach uses several methods to firstly address the root of a problem rather than addressing behaviour directly. Once a solution is found and dealt with at the root of the cause, it affects the behaviour automatically. Although behaviour stems from the root of the problem one must also address and compound on the newly reflected behaviour for long-lasting results.

Failure to address and compound a newly developed behaviour can sometimes result in reverting back to previous behaviours or triggers. It is therefore recommended that additional sessions are scheduled with a practitioner for this purpose.
